Court adjourns on Arewa24TV

The Federal High Court sitting in Kano has adjourned a suit filed by the Islamic Research and Da’awa Foundation, Abuja, against Arewa24TV and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to June 9, 2026.

Court adjourns on Arewa24TV2

The Islamic Research and Da’awa Foundation instituted the legal action over allegations that the television station aired content it considers indecent, suggestive and inconsistent with Islamic and Hausa cultural values.

The plaintiff, represented by its solicitor, A.A. Hikima, is asking the court to examine what it described as inappropriate programming on the station, while also questioning the role of the broadcasting regulator.

According to court filings, the Foundation specifically cited programmes including: ‘Mata A Yau’ and ‘H-Hip Hop’, alleging that they contain indecent dressing, obscene expressions and sexually suggestive language. The group argued that such content promotes values that conflict with Islamic ethics and traditional Hausa cultural norms, describing the broadcasts as a distortion of accepted societal standards.

In the suit, the Foundation also joined the National Broadcasting Commission as a co-defendant, accusing the agency of failing in its regulatory responsibilities by allegedly not taking sufficient action against content it believes violates provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. The plaintiffs contend that the NBC has a statutory obligation to monitor broadcast content and ensure compliance with established ethical and professional standards.

As part of its reliefs, the Foundation is seeking an injunction restraining AREWA24 from producing, airing or streaming programmes it considers harmful to public morality and cultural decency. It is also asking the court to compel the NBC to strengthen enforcement of broadcasting regulations and address what it described as lapses in oversight.

The case is expected to continue when proceedings resume on June 9, 2026.
