LibertyTVR Chair celebrates Aliyu Gusau

…Extols his legacy in security, democracy

Chairman of Liberty TVR, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan, has congratulated retired Lieutenant-General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau (rtd) on his 83rd birthday, describing him as ‘the People’s General’, and paying tribute to his enduring influence on Nigeria’s security and political landscape.

In a goodwill message marking the occasion, Ramalan highlighted General Gusau’s long-standing contributions to national development, noting that his career spanning more than four decades has left a significant mark on Nigeria’s military and intelligence institutions.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s security establishment, General Gusau served in several strategic positions, including National Security Adviser (NSA), Minister of Defence, Chief of Army Staff, and intelligence chief. He remains the only Nigerian to have served as National Security Adviser (NSA) under three different administrations — Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

As Minister of Defence under Jonathan between March 2014 and May 2015, he was tasked with strengthening Nigeria’s response to the Boko Haram insurgency during one of the country’s most difficult security periods.

Gen. Gusau also played a defining role in reshaping Nigeria’s intelligence structure. As Director of Military Intelligence and Director-General of the National Security Organisation, he led the restructuring of the security framework in 1986, resulting in the establishment of three agencies that remain central to Nigeria’s intelligence architecture — the State Security Service (now DSS), National Intelligence Agency and Defence Intelligence Agency.

His contributions also extended to military education and leadership development. Between 1992 and 1993, he served as Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna. General Gusau was also credited with playing a key role during Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Serving as NSA during the early years of the Fourth Republic, he coordinated the retirement of military officers who had previously occupied political offices, a move many observers viewed as crucial in strengthening democratic governance and reducing the possibility of further military interventions. After retiring from active military service, he ventured into politics through the People’s Democratic Party and contested for the presidency in the 2007 and 2011 election cycles.

Born on May 18, 1943, in Gusau, Zamfara State, the retired general’s place of birth later became attached to his name for distinction purposes within the military.

Beyond public service and politics, General Gusau is also known for his passion for research and strategic studies. He founded the Gusau Institute in Kaduna and donated his extensive private collection to establish the Aliyu Mohammed Research Library, a centre dedicated to policy research, leadership studies and international security.

His legacy in public service also extends to his family, with his son, Mahdi Mohammed Gusau, having served as Deputy Governor of Zamfara State.

Ramalan described the retired general as a statesman whose contributions continue to shape Nigeria’s security and democratic journey, wishing him good health and many more years of service and impact.
