Some electricity consumers across the country have decried the surreptitious rising cost of electricity reflecting on their bills. Electricity: FG hikes prices of prepaid meters

The Federal Government has raised the cost of both single-phase and three-phase electricity meters beginning from November 15, 2021. This was announced yesterday, via a circular issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC), dated November 11, 2021, and addressed to Managing Directors, all electricity distribution companies, (DisCos) and all meter asset providers. Electricity consumers may have to contend with higher charges following the Federal Government’s decision to end most of its subsidy payments in the electricity sector come next year, 2022. The Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency, the Federal Government agency mandated to certify electricity meters imported into the country have been directed by the President, Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the installation of 36 million meters nationwide by June 2021. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says the nation’s electricity grid on Sunday experienced multiple tripping, leading to the collapse of the system. The Federal Government has extended the suspension of the new electricity tariff by one week.
