The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated an investigation into reports of an accidental airstrike on a weekly market in Jilli, a community located along the Borno–Yobe border.

The Chief of Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, on Sunday ordered an immediate probe, emphasising that the Nigerian Air Force treats any report of civilian casualties with “utmost seriousness and empathy”.
This was disclosed by NAF spokesman, Ehimen Ejodame, in response to inquiries over the incident. Recall that at least 56 people – mostly traders – were feared killed, while 14 others sustained injuries and were hospitalised following the strike.
Ejodame called for calm, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. “The Nigerian Air Force has taken note of reports alleging that an airstrike conducted on Saturday, April 11, 2026, may have affected a local market in Jilli, resulting in civilian casualties”, he said.
He added that the service has activated its Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to carry out a fact-finding mission at the location. Reaffirming its stance, the Nigerian Air Force stated that the protection of innocent lives remains central to its operations and pledged full cooperation with relevant authorities and community representatives.
While the probe continues, the NAF urged the public and media to avoid speculation and allow due process. “The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and transparency”, Ejodame said, adding that all credible concerns would be addressed with diligence.
