The Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria, (IBAN), has opened formal talks with the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, (ARCON), on sweeping reforms aimed at overhauling the nation’s advertising standards for the broadcast industry.

During a meeting held yesterday at ARCON’s Annex Head Office in Utako District, Abuja, IBAN Chairman, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan, led a select committee of the association to engage with ARCON Director-General, Dr. Olalekan Olumuyiwa Fadolapo.
According to a statement issued after the engagement, Ramalan presented a detailed proposal outlining IBAN’s vision for a comprehensive regulatory framework that would modernise and streamline Nigeria’s advertising standards, especially as they relate to broadcast operations.
He highlighted what he described as “urgent gaps” and “outdated procedures” in the current regulatory environment, stressing that a unified and clearly defined standard would improve compliance, protect audiences, encourage innovation, and ensure fairness in the industry.

In response, ARCON’s Director-General welcomed the proposal, commending IBAN’s initiative and describing the collaboration as timely and necessary. He emphasised ARCON’s commitment to reforms that reflect global best practices while safeguarding national interests.
After deliberations, both bodies agreed to establish a four-member Joint Committee mandated to develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), as well as new guidelines and policies that will govern the advertising ecosystem within the broadcast sector.
The committee’s recommendations will be submitted to the Minister of Information and National Orientation for consideration and approval.
