Inflates N’West projects, lists non-existing Kano Northern Bypass, among others

The official X account of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has come under intense criticism for disseminating misleading information about Federal Government infrastructure projects across Nigeria.

Analysts and observers say the post contains multiple inaccuracies, including inflated project figures, misattributed locations, and misrepresented funding.

In the North-West, the post reportedly included projects from the North-Central and North-East, such as the Bama-Dikwa Road, Damaturu-Maiduguri Road, Lokoja-Okene Road, and roads in Benue, presenting them as North-West projects in a bid to exaggerate the zone’s share.

Also, the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano expressway was listed at ₦764 billion, a figure associated with a rejected contractor bid, instead of the actual awarded cost of ₦250 billion. Additionally, some projects were duplicated or misrepresented, including Kano-Maiduguri and Damaturu-Maiduguri.

Civil society groups also highlighted that the Kano Northern Bypass is non-existing, remaining at the planning stage, while the Abuja–Kaduna section has stalled, with work not reaching Jere in seven months due to funding shortages. Funding delays reportedly also affect the Sokoto–Badagry project.

In the South-West, several Lagos projects were omitted, leaving only four listed. Ironically, three of the listed projects actually belong to Lagos, giving a misleading impression that the region has fewer federal projects than it does.

The North-East and South-East were also underrepresented, with the infographic listing only ₦400 billion for each region, while North-Central reportedly received ₦1 trillion, raising concerns over uneven project distribution.

“This is not just misleading, it is shameful for the official handle to post such erroneous information”, a critic said, emphasising that misrepresentation at this level undermines public trust.

The administration has reiterated its commitment to equitable development, asserting that no Nigerian is “second-class”, and that federal infrastructure projects benefit all regions.

Analysts, civil society groups, and concerned citizens continue to call for transparent reporting on project costs, progress, and regional allocations.
