Insecurity: Over 1,400 killed by gunmen within 6 months in Nigeria – UN

The United Nations’ country director, Edward Kallon has lamented the spate of killings in Nigeria.  Citing the government’s statistics, Kallon noted that over 1,400 people have lost their lives in different parts of the country as a result of kidnapping and banditry within six months. The United Nations has warned that elevated public debt is limiting the capacity of Nigeria and other developing African countries to boost necessary spending needed to counter the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on their economies. This may eventually lead to an escalation of social unrest and political tensions, which could in turn worsen food insecurity, violence, internal displacement and migration pressures. Nigeria tops South Africa in FDI in 2020 – UN Report

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy attracted a total FDI of $2.6 billion in 2020 down from the $3.3 billion it attracted a year earlier, data from the United Nations Trade Association shows. South Africa, a major competitor for FDI inflows in sub-Saharan Africa attracted less, with $2.5 billion the report highlights.
