Subsidy Removal: NLC to commence total shutdown October 3 – Ajaero

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have resolved to ground activities nationwide from October 3rd.

Its President, Joe Ajaero, informed the NEC members at a virtual National Executive Council meeting, via Zoom, yesterday.

According to him, the move was as a result of what as a result of what the labour unions labelled as the Government’s “failure” to put policies in place to ease Nigerians’ suffering after the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol.

“We agreed that by October 1, barring any other developments, everybody will stay at home, no movements on the roads and the air”, he said.

Recall that, following the removal of the subsidy, the NLC held meetings with the official of the TUC on the way forward, and first observed a two-day nationwide warning strike on September 5th and 6th to show their readiness for the indefinite strike. Ajaero stated that it was decided that the two centres should collaborate in order to communicate their position to the Government.

The NLC gave the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum, to implement the demands they had asked for, which ended last week. Ajaero lamented that “none of the demands put before the Federal Government had been addressed”.

In preparation for the longer strike later in the month, the union initially staged a two-day countrywide warning strike on September 5 and 6.
