This warning came on Monday during the screening exercise conducted by the Senate’s Ad-Hoc Committee on Regional Development Commissions, led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia-North).

The session began with the 14-member NWDC board, headed by Alhaji Lawal Samai’la Abdullahi as Chairman and Professor Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji as Managing Director and CEO. Other nominees include Dr. Yahaya Umar Namahe, Hon. Aminu Suleiman, Ja’afar Abubakar Sadeeq, Yahaya Aminu Abdullahi, Hon. Engr. Muhammad Ali Wudil, Shamsu Sule, Nasidi Ali, Chukwu Chijtoke, Ahmed Mohammed, Engr. Ahmed Rufai Timasantyu, Macdonalds Michael Uyi, and Hon. Babatunde Dada.

During the session, Senator Muntari Dandutse (APC, Katsina) commended the qualifications of the nominees, describing the appointment of the Chairman as “well deserved” and applauding President Tinubu for the selection.

Senator Babangida Hussaini reminded the nominees of the gravity of their responsibilities, urging them to justify the confidence placed in them. “The confidence of Nigerians and President Tinubu is in your hands,” he said. “Work for Nigerians and do not let the President or the nation down.”

Echoing these sentiments, Senator Kalu emphasised that the nominees must put national interests above personal gains. He warned against unethical practices, stating, “You are the face of these organisations. Do not engage in any act that could tarnish the image of the President or the commissions. The Senate will not hesitate to recommend your removal if you fail to deliver.”

Kalu further underscored the importance of accountability, cautioning against the misuse of resources and urging the nominees to avoid paying for unexecuted projects. “We are monitoring you closely. Use the resources for the development of the people. The Senate committee will ensure accountability,” he stressed.

The committee noted that the confirmation of the nominees was critical for the timely passage of the commission’s budget, as the Senate prepares for its recess.

Senator Kalu concluded by encouraging the nominees to build strong ties with the National Assembly, warning that any delays in executing their mandates could hinder the effectiveness of the interventionist Commissions.
