…Urges EFCC to grant el-Rufa’i bail

Executive Chairman of Liberty TVR Media Group and former APC Caucus Chairman in Kaduna State, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan, has called for national renewal and interfaith harmony, as Muslims and Christians across the country commence the holy seasons of Ramadan and Lent simultaneously.

In a goodwill message issued yesterday, Ramalan described the rare overlap of the two sacred observances on February 18 as a profound spiritual moment for Nigeria, symbolising sacrifice, unity and an opportunity for collective rebirth.
He noted that Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer and reflection, and Lent — the 40-day Christian period of penitence and preparation ahead of Easter — both emphasise self-discipline, compassion and devotion to God. “This rare spiritual convergence is a powerful reminder that, despite our diverse faith traditions, we share common ideals of sacrifice, love, humility and service to humanity”, he stated.
Ramalan urged Nigerians to use the period to pray for peace, stability and progress, stressing that the country’s challenges require not only political and economic solutions but also sincere spiritual reflection. He also called on religious leaders to promote tolerance and mutual respect, encouraging acts of charity and kindness toward the less-privileged.
“As Muslims observe fasting from dawn to dusk and Christians engage in prayer and abstinence, let us remember the vulnerable in our communities. Let this season inspire generosity, forgiveness and unity,” he said, adding that faith-based solidarity could serve as a catalyst for national cohesion.
In a related development, Ramalan appealed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to grant bail to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufa’i, in the spirit of Ramadan.
He urged the anti-graft agency to consider what he described as “the compassionate and forgiving essence” of the holy month in handling the matter involving the former governor.
“Ramadan is a season of mercy and compassion. We appeal to the EFCC to temper justice with mercy and allow Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i the opportunity to observe this sacred period with his family”, Ramalan said.
He maintained that his appeal should not be misconstrued as interference in the Commission’s constitutional mandate to investigate allegations of financial misconduct, but rather as a humanitarian plea rooted in religious values.
Ramalan noted that el-Rufa’i, who served two terms as governor of Kaduna State, remains a prominent political figure with supporters across the country, adding that due process should be followed in addressing any allegations against him.
As of press time, the EFCC had not issued an official response to the appeal, while details surrounding the former governor’s reported detention were yet to be formally clarified by the Commission.
