Police confirm threats to Lagos by IPOB, Yoruba groups

…Says Okada riders spike crimes in the city

The Police in Lagos State has disclosed that the Command is investigating threats by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, (IPOB), as well as Yoruba separatist groups.

Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu made the disclosure at a stakeholders forum on security in Lagos, which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presided over.

Odumosu vowed that no breakdown of law and order, or attacks on soft targets would be tolerated.

The CP said the command was aware of agitations for the Oodua Republic by some Yoruba secessionists “and the threats to disrupt law and order in the State”.

The Police chief further disclosed that twenty-four persons belonging to the groups have been identified and are being closely monitored.

The Police Commissioner further said that statistics have shown that armed hoodlums who operate on motorcycles or Okada, are responsible for the bulk of crimes. He said hoodlums had found motorcycles as a veritable means of escape from the scenes of crime.

According to him, crime reports from the field in the last five months have shown that the hoodlums are responsible for armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping, murder, burglary and stealing, among others.

While assuring that strategies are being put in place to neutralise criminality, Odumosu appealed to residents to be vigilant and report suspicious persons or movements to security agencies.
