Kano State government has expressed satisfaction with the Appeal Court’s verdict in the Kano emirate case, which upheld the State government’s actions regarding chieftaincy appointments and reforms.
In a press conference yesterday, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, stated that the ruling reinforces the State’s authority over chieftaincy affairs and clarifies the jurisdiction of the courts in such matters.
Recall that the Appeal Court overturned a previous Federal High Court decisions that invalidated the State’s actions, including the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
Dederi, who stated that the State government welcomes the verdict that resolved the legal impasse around the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and other parties, emphasised the Government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and modernization of traditional institutions while preserving Kano’s cultural heritage.
The Attorney-General explained that the landmark ruling further clarified the rightful jurisdiction over the matters, and further underscoring the constitutional boundaries of the Courts in such affairs.
He urged all parties, including dethroned Emir Aminu Ado-Bayero, to respect the court’s judgment and cooperate with the Government, in order to promote peace, unity and progress in the State.
The Appeal Court’s decision validates the Kano State Emirates Council (Repeal) Law 2024 and all actions taken by the Governor pursuant to it. The Government called for compliance with the court’s order, to ensure the rule of law and the effective implementation of the judgment.
While extending the government’s appreciation to the Judiciary for what he described as “upholding the principles of Justice and fairness”, Dederi noted that the State government remains committed to working with traditional institutions, ensuring harmony, and fostering development across all emirates.
