Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a strong warning on governance and national security, declaring that any government unable to guarantee the safety of its citizens has effectively lost its legitimacy.

Obasanjo made the statement during an interview on television while speaking on Nigeria’s security challenges, noting that the protection of lives and property remains the most fundamental responsibility of any state.
He argued that when a government fails in this core duty, it can no longer justify its continued existence, stressing that insecurity undermines both governance and public trust.
“The government that cannot guarantee security of life and property of its citizens has forfeited the right of existence”, he said.
The former president’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns over rising cases of banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency across the country.
