“Fmr Speaker Na’Abba struggled to defend Legislature’s role, functionality” – Tinubu

…“He saved Nigeria’s democracy, spoke for Justice and Freedom – Shehu Sani

President Bola Tinubu has described late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, as a man who struggled to defend the functionality and role of the legislature while in government.

The President said this while sympathising with the Na’Abba family, the government, and the people of Kano State over the passing of Na’Abba. He also described him as a disciplined and resolute politician while alive. The Late Na’Abba was Speaker of the House Representatives following the return of democracy in Nigeria from 1999 to 2003, succeeding Salisu Buhari.

President Tinubu, through a condolence message by his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale expressed profound grief at the loss, recalling the contributions of the late ex-lawmaker to nation-building through legislation, advocacy, and policy.

The President prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed and comfort for those who mourn this painful loss.

Also, ex- lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, in a tribute to the former Speaker yesterday, said Ghali Na’Abba saved Nigeria’s democracy. He said this on his official X handle.

He wrote: “Hon Ghali Umar Na’Abba, Ex-Speaker House of Representatives. He lived an accomplished life. He saved Nigeria’s democracy at its most crucial moment. He upheld and defended the honour and independence of the parliament.

“Without the courage and principles of the likes of Ghali, the term limits for Governors and Presidents would have been expunged from our constitution. Ghali spoke for justice and stood for freedom. A great loss.

“My condolences to his family. May Allah grant him Aljanna Firdausi. Amin”.
