“Akeredolu’s death lesson to other politicians” – Nigerians react

Some Nigerians, particularly on X platform (formerly Twitter), have reacted to the death of Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who died in a hospital yesterday morning.

According to many of the comments, the death of the governor was a lesson to other politicians to ensure the provision of basic healthcare facilities, rather than fleeing abroad. Some of the commentators also agreed that the Late governor should have resigned and handed over to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, when it was clear that the state of his health could no longer allow him.

Recall that Akeredolu died yesterday morning, after a prolonged battle with a protracted illness. He was 67 years old.

There had been a series of calls from activists and stakeholders from the state demanding the resignation of Akeredolu due to his health status but he refused.

Reacting to the news of his death, an X user, Chris Ejiofor, opined that the Late governor should have stepped-down from governance when it was obvious his sickness could not allow him to perform. He posted: “May his soul rest in peace. He shouldn’t have done what he did with power in the last days of his life. He wanted to rule from sick bed to grave, the same way he criticised Umaru Musa Yar’Adua during his reign”.

Another user, Busari Olayemi posted: “After all he did by not by not handing over to his deputy. Can he do that now? Why do human forget death when making decisions?

Omoo, RIP to him shaa… but why was he the governor when he knew he has health issue?? Omoo these men should allow their bodies to rest naa”, another user, @Queen_Aeesha added.

I hope other politicians learn that if you don’t make basic healthcare accessible, nothing will save you. May his soul rest in peace”, another user, Presh posted.
