Emirates Tussle: ?Police uncover alleged plot to cause mayhem in Kano

Police on Kano

The Nigeria Police have said that security agencies in Kano State have discovered plans by some troublemakers to cause havoc in important locations, such as the Kano State House of Assembly and other Government buildings.

The Commissioner of Police, Mohammad Usaini Gumel, who shared the information during a media briefing at the Police headquarters in Kano, said a joint team from the security agencies will carry out house-to-house searches on the persons or property of anyone who may feel they are above the law.

CP Gumel emphasised that the security agencies were committed to upholding the law, saying it would not hesitate to maintain the peace as well as protect the lives and property of citizens.

Kano State has been at the centre of discussions over the past week due to the recent dissolution of the Gaya Emirate by the State government.

The amended law, passed by the NNPP-controlled House of Assembly, reversed the previous law enacted by the former Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, in 2020, which created additional emirates and dethroned the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II.

Recall that on May 23, Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated the ousted Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano, directing all the affected Emirs to vacate all the palaces and submit to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs all government belongings in their possession within 48 hours.

The move did not go down well with supporters of the ousted emir Bayero, who was affected by the amended law, sparking a series of angry protests.
