ECOWAS imposes new sanctions on Niger Republic coup leaders

The Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) has taken decisive action against the leaders of the recent coup in Niger Republic by imposing a series of new sanctions.

The disclosure was made by Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngeale, while addressing State House correspondents in Abuja, yesterday.

The sanctions include a travel ban and asset freeze on the coup leaders and their associates, and is coming after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum for the re-instatement of President Mohamed Bazoum.

Ajuri, who did not share more details on the sanctions, said it is being carried out through the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN).

The ECOWAS bloc had earlier given the coup leaders seven days to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum or face further sanctions. However, the coup leaders refused to back down and even severed ties with Nigeria, Togo, France and the US.
