Former Senator representing Kaduna-Central, Shehu Sani, has criticised ex-governors Nasir el-Rufa’i and Rotimi Amaechi, stating they owe Nigerians an apology for the country’s current woes.

Speaking during his Sallah message at his residence, Sani described it as hypocritical for political figures who have held influential positions for over two decades to now lament the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
“If el-Rufai and Amaechi are still talking about poverty and hunger, then they must begin by apologising to Nigerians. They’ve held powerful offices since 1999. If the country is still struggling, then they bear some responsibility”, Sani stated.
He blamed the prevailing hunger, unemployment, and insecurity on years of poor governance, failed policies, and neglect by leaders who had ample opportunity to create lasting change.
“It is shameless for those who contributed to this crisis to now speak as if they were never part of it. People are unable to afford food, education, or healthcare, and the very individuals who played key roles in this situation are now acting like spectators”, he added.
Sani further accused the political elite of trying to distance themselves from the impact of their own decisions, all while presenting themselves as part of the solution. “You can’t rule Nigeria for years and then pretend to be innocent observers. What Nigerians need now is honesty and accountability – not recycled speeches”, he said.
Amid the ongoing hardship, Sani called for national unity and prayer, urging both citizens and the government to commit to meaningful reforms and sincere leadership. “We are in one of the most difficult periods in our nation’s history. But we must not lose hope. Let us pray for peace and progress, and more importantly, demand responsible leadership”, he urged.
Addressing the insecurity in northern Nigeria, he stressed the need for unity in confronting banditry and insurgency. “The North is bleeding. Millions have been displaced, and thousands killed. We must rally behind all sincere efforts to restore peace”, he stated.
Sani also appealed to Nigerians to remain patriotic and resist efforts to sow division or disillusionment. “Don’t let anyone convince you Nigeria is a scam. Be proud of your country – but be bold enough to demand justice and accountability from those who brought us here”, he stressed.
