…Says 139m poor Nigerians is his ‘scorecard’
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to either abandon what it described as his ‘failed’ economic policies or resign, following recent reports showing worsening poverty and hunger across Nigeria.
In a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party cited the latest World Bank report indicating that about 139 million Nigerians, representing roughly 60% of the population, now live below the national poverty line.
The ADC also referred to a World Food Programme (WFP) report which estimated that 17 million Nigerians are facing acute hunger, describing the figures as evidence of a deepening economic and food security crisis.
According to the party, the reports validate its long-standing criticism of the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, arguing that gains frequently highlighted by the Federal Government – including increased revenue, economic growth and rising foreign reserves – have failed to improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
“The evidence of 139 million people living in poverty and 17 million at the risk of starvation is President Tinubu’s scorecard. On account of this catastrophic failure alone, President Tinubu should be contemplating resigning from office rather than seeking re-election”, the statement said.
The ADC further warned that if current policies remain unchanged beyond 2027, nearly 79 percent of Nigerians could be living in or close to poverty.
