A Police Inspector, identified as Jacob Daniel, was on Tuesday evening shot dead at headquarters of Adamawa Police Command in Yola during exchange of gunfire with soldiers, who invaded the facility to allegedly avenge the shooting of one of their colleagues.
A policeman, who was reportedly part of a patrol team, had allegedly shot the soldier in the leg at the popular Target Junction, Yola, the State capital.
In retaliation, some soldiers were said to have later stormed the Police Command Headquarters at about 11pm, during which there was heavy exchange of gunfire between them and the police officers during which Daniel was shot dead.
The exchange of gunfire resulted in commotion in the capital city as the residents thought Boko Haram insurgents had invaded Yola. It was learnt that the soldiers later retreated. It was gathered that the affected soldier, who was shot in the leg, was later rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Yola for medical attention.
The State’s Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Babatola, confirmed the incident, in a statement issued by the Command spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, yesterday. He further said that such unwarranted conflict would be strictly treated in accordance with extant laws.
The CP, however, appealed for calm, assuring that the two security agencies were doing everything legally possible to address the situation.
When contacted, the Brigade Commander, 23 Armoured Brigade, Brig. Gen. Gambo Mohammed, said the fracas was caused by the shooting of a soldier by some policemen.
