At least 21 athletes and officials in the Kano contingent to the just-concluded National Sports Festival which was held in Ogun State have perished in a road accident.
Witnesses confirmed the death toll to newsmen, saying more than 10 people sustained serious injuries.
According to an official on the trip, Ado Salisu, the incident occurred on Daka-Tsalle bridge, Garun Malam local government area at about 8am on Saturday, when the bus hit a pothole and somersaulted.
Salisu said 17 athletes and two officials died on the spot, while two more passed away at Kura General Hospital.
According to him, notable among the dead include spokesman for the Kano State Sports Council, Galadima Ibrahim. He said the injured passengers are receiving treatment at the hospital while preparations are ongoing to hand over the bodies to their respective families.
It was gathered that 30 other buses that carried the Kano contingents departed Ogun on Thursday night, and arrived Kano safely.
