The Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has stressed that Nigeria’s democratic future depends largely on the protection of a free, independent and responsible press.

In an issued statement marking the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, Chairman of IBAN, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan, described independent media as a cornerstone of democracy and a critical instrument for ensuring accountability, building public trust and promoting national unity.
Ramalan reaffirmed the association’s commitment to defending press freedom and supporting pluralistic, high-quality journalism amid growing challenges confronting media organisations and practitioners across the country. “Access to independent media and freedom of expression are not privileges — they are fundamental human rights”, he stated.
He emphasised that both the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights frameworks guarantee the protection of journalists, urging authorities to ensure media professionals operate without fear of intimidation, harassment, arbitrary detention or censorship.
The IBAN Chairman highlighted the particularly vital role of journalists working in conflict-prone areas, noting that their work in exposing realities such as banditry, terrorism, militancy and piracy remains essential to public safety and national awareness.
Expressing concern over what he described as increasing incidents of intimidation, attacks, regulatory pressure and legal harassment against media houses and journalists, Ramalan warned that such trends could encourage fear and self-censorship within the industry.
He called on government institutions, security agencies, regulatory bodies and the Judiciary to uphold press freedom and guarantee the safety of journalists at all times.
Ramalan also reiterated IBAN’s support for ongoing national and global efforts, including initiatives led by the United Nations, aimed at protecting journalists and strengthening independent media.
“A free press is not an adversary of the state, but a necessary partner in democracy, accountability and national development”, he added.
