The United States of America has chosen Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden as its 46th president, after defeating the incumbent President Donald Trump.

Biden has won the 2020 presidential election, sending President Trump to a bitter defeat four years after he shocked the world by winning the White House with a victory over Hillary Clinton.

Biden crossed the 270-vote threshold in the Electoral College yesterday after the State of Pennsylvania for him. He was also able to capture Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona, states that Trump carried in 2016.

Biden now holds the record for the most number of votes cast for any presidential candidate in history – more than 73 million – shattering the previous mark set by Barack Obama in 2008. He leads Trump by nearly 4 million votes nationwide.

The former vice president, who turns 78 this month, won his bid for the White House on his third attempt, becoming the oldest person ever elected president in the U.S.  His running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., is the first Black woman and first Asian American elected vice president in U.S. history.

Meanwhile, President Trump signaled he would not accept Joe Biden being projected to replace him in the White House.

Trump issued a statement yesterday, minutes after numerous news outlets declared Biden the winner of the presidential race, claiming that networks were helping the Democrat “falsely” pose as the winner and promising to fight the results in court. The result now consigns Trump to becoming the first one-term president since George H. W. Bush at the start of the 1990s.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated President-elect Biden on his election as new President of the United States “at a time of uncertainty and fear in world affairs.”

According to a press statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President, (Media & Publicity) Garba Shehu, the Nigerian leader said “your election is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means”.

President Buhari also called on Biden “to introduce greater engagement with Africa on the basis of reciprocal respects and shared interests”.
