Two mosques destroyed in fresh attack on Enugu Muslim community

Some hoodlums have attacked Muslim communities, destroying properties and two mosques in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Sources told BBC Hausa service on Monday that the altercation started when a Muslim woman selling tomato took Keke-NAPEP from a village market to her shop in the town.

According to the source, the woman and the Keke-NAPEP driver got into an argument over her transport fare, resulting in the destruction and burning of properties belonging to Muslims in the area.

The leader of Nsukka Muslim community, Alhaji Sani Ugwuanyi also told BBC Hausa that, “The two mosques, one for daily congregational prayers and the other one which is the central mosque here have both been destroyed.

When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe said the force was not aware of the attacks but promised to investigate it.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has condemned attacks on Muslim places of worship in Enugu and other states in Igboland.

The MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, made the condemnation in a statement on Monday, saying that the Islamic School, Afikpo, in Ebonyi State has also received threats of impending invasion.
