Twitter Ban: Activist tackles el-Rufa’i over using App outside Nigeria

Human rights activist, Rinu Oduala, has tackled the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmed el-Rufa’i, for using the Twitter app outside the country.

Recall that on 5 June, the Federal Government officially put an indefinite ban on Twitter, restricting it from operating in Nigeria.

The governor made a tweet on Wednesday, in reply to a tweet by the human rights activist, stating that he is outside the country, not using VPN to tweet. His tweet read: VPN? Nope, outside Nigeria for a couple of days, so can tweet for the time being.

However, Oduala fired back at him, stating that the only place he gets the freedom of speech is outside Nigeria.

El-Rufa’i replied saying, Conflating Twitter with freedom of speech is a significant exaggeration. Freedoms of many descriptions existed before and without Twitter, and will remain long after!! Enjoy your day.

In an issued statement on Wednesday the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, revealed at the Nigerian International Partnership Forum, (NIPP), in Paris, France, that Twitter was not banned in the country but only suspended.

According to the minister, all issues with Twitter will be resolved soon.
