The Federal Government has warned that the ongoing consumption of hides and skins, commonly called ponmo, threatens Nigeria’s leather industry, currently valued at around $5 billion. Speaking at the National Campaign Against Ponmo in Abuja on Thursday, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ikemounso, Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, said the practice diverts vital raw materials away from local leather production and export.
