Sultan declares Ramadan end

Demands offensive against terrorists

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared today Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal 1447AH, marking the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr after the non-sighting of the crescent moon.

The announcement, conveyed in a statement signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu on behalf of the Sultanate Council, in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee, confirmed that no credible reports of the Shawwal moon were received on Wednesday, March 18 – the 29th day of Ramadan. Consequently, Thursday, March 19, was declared the 30th day of Ramadan.

While congratulating Muslims across Nigeria on the successful completion of the holy month, the Sultan urged continued prayers for national unity, peace and development.

Recall that the Federal Government had earlier declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. In a statement signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, extended warm congratulations to Muslims nationwide.

However, the Eid announcement was overshadowed by rising security concerns, as the Sultan issued a strong warning to Nigeria’s military following deadly attacks in Maiduguri. The March 16 bombings, attributed to suspected insurgents, left at least 23 people dead and over 100 injured.

Reacting to the incident, the monarch condemned the violence and called for urgent, decisive military action. “Are we now back to the bad old days?” he asked, urging security agencies to intensify efforts against insurgency. He stressed the need for a proactive approach, warning against reactive responses to attacks.

According to him, security forces must “take the war to the terrorists” rather than wait for strikes before responding.

The Sultan further reiterated that such acts of violence are un-Islamic and should not be associated with the religion. He called on the government to demonstrate stronger political will in ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of background.

Extending condolences to victims and families affected by the attacks in Borno State, he prayed for the repose of the deceased and speedy recovery of the injured.

He also urged Nigerians to promote peaceful co-existence and national unity, especially during the festive period, emphasizing that collective responsibility is key to sustaining peace and stability in the country.
