Kerosene prices have surged across Nigeria, with some states now paying nearly ₦4,000 per litre, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, (NBS).

Household kerosene prices have continued to rise sharply across Nigeria, with residents in several states now paying close to ₦4,000 per litre, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS ‘Household Kerosene Price Watch’ for April 2026 showed that Sokoto State recorded the highest average price at ₦3,965.10 per litre. It was followed by Kebbi State at ₦3,808.75 and Lagos State at ₦3,790.90 per litre.
Other states with significantly high kerosene prices included Katsina State, Edo State, Niger State, Plateau State, and Zamfara State, where prices reportedly exceeded ₦3,300 per litre. At the lower end of the chart, Bayelsa State recorded the cheapest average price at ₦1,815.40 per litre, while Kogi State and Yobe State sold at ₦1,982.02 and ₦2,235.77 respectively.
Kerosene, which was once one of the most common cooking fuels for low-income households in Nigeria, previously sold between ₦50 and ₦100 per litre before subsidy removal in 2016 and the continued depreciation of the Naira contributed to major increases in fuel prices.
The increase has forced many households to abandon kerosene for alternatives like cooking gas and charcoal, as living costs continue to rise nationwide.
The report also highlighted sharp month-to-month increases between March and April 2026. Kaduna State recorded the highest increase, at 35.16 percent, followed by Bayelsa, Katsina, Imo State, and Akwa Ibom state.
