National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Musa Gabam, has strongly condemned the arrest of ex-NHIS Executive Secretary, Prof. Yusuf Usman, describing it as an act of political intimidation and a violation of democratic principles.

In an issued press statement yesterday, Gabam criticised the government for using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to suppress opposition voices.
Professor Usman, a respected advocate for justice and democracy, was reportedly arrested after openly criticising government policies. His detention, according to Gabam, raises concerns over the shrinking space for dissent in Nigeria. “The continued harassment and intimidation of opposition leaders by the government, through the EFCC, is unacceptable and undermines the principles of democracy and the rule of law”, he stated.
The SDP Chairman accused the EFCC of straying from its core mandate of fighting corruption, arguing that the agency now serves as a political tool rather than an independent institution. He further lamented that while some corrupt leaders enjoy protection, opposition figures are unfairly targeted.
Gabam called on the EFCC chairman, in order to ensure that the agency operates with neutrality and focuses on its constitutional duty of tackling economic crimes. He also urged Nigerians to unite in resisting what he described as an attempt to stifle political opposition and suppress free speech.

“The SDP will continue to monitor the situation and demand justice for Professor Yusuf Usman and all other opposition leaders facing persecution. We remain committed to promoting democracy, justice, and the rule of law”, he affirmed.
Gabam’s statement reflects growing concerns over the political climate in Nigeria, as opposition figures face increasing scrutiny from law enforcement agencies. His call for collective resistance underscores the broader struggle to preserve democratic values in the country.
