A teacher was killed and an unspecified number of students writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations abducted yesterday, after suspected ISWAP terrorists attacked Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira-Uba local government area of Borno state.

The attackers, who reportedly arrived on motorcycles, stormed the border community on its market day, passed through the market and invaded the school while students were in their classrooms, shooting sporadically and causing panic.

Special Adviser to the Adamawa State Governor on Media and Strategy, Solomon Kwamagar, confirmed that one teacher was shot dead during the assault, while several students and women trading within the school premises were taken away by the gunmen.

“I was informed that they came through the market on motorcycles and went to Government Day Secondary School, Lassa. They shot and killed one teacher and took away all the students who were in their classrooms,” Kwamagar said, adding that efforts were ongoing to determine the exact number of abductees.

Providing an update, Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, disclosed that joint security forces comprising the Army, Police, and Civilian Joint Task Force had rescued seven of the abducted students.

“For now, seven of them have been rescued. We cannot confirm their gender yet. Assessment is still ongoing,” Tar said, noting that security agencies were intensifying efforts to free the remaining victims and that a delegation had been sent to the community to assess the situation and reassure residents.

Spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, said security operatives engaged the attackers, preventing what could have been a larger-scale abduction.
