Rivers: “I have committed no offence to warrant impeachment” – Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, yesterday, said he has not committed any offence to warrant impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This is as a fresh crisis engulfed the State House of Assembly amidst rumours of an impending impeachment procedure against Fubara, as the House yesterday removed its leader, Edison Ehie. House members subsequently fled for safety as tear gas was fired outside the Complex.

The development occurred hours after a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.

It was unclear if the fire was connected with the political imbroglio, but rumours of a rift between Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, who is now Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, have been brewing for some time now.

Addressing his supporters who protested the development outside the Assembly Complex, the governor said he has not done anything to warrant an impeachment proceeding by the Assembly.

The Governor accused the Police of shooting at him on his way to inspect the Assembly Complex gutted by the fire, but named a senior officer in the Rivers State Police Command as the leader of the team that was deployed to obstruct his access to the complex.

He also dismissed the action of the State Assembly to serve an impeachment notice on him, and challenged the lawmakers and others to clearly state his offence. The Governor said he does not care about being impeached, but vowed to resist an unjust process and assured the people of the State of getting the dividends of democracy, said he would speak on the matter at the appropriate time.

Meanwhile, leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark, has blamed minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, and Fubara’s predecessor, for the governor’s ordeal.
