Senior Citizen and Elder-statesman, Mohammed Rabiu Ba?o, has raised concerns over recent political actions in Northern Nigeria, which he argues threaten the integrity of long-standing traditional institutions.

In a passionate press statement issued yesterday, Ba?o criticised the recent moves by governors in Kano, Sokoto, and Katsina States as attempts to undermine the region’s cultural heritage.

Ba?o pointed to specific incidents, such as the dethroning of Emir Aminu Bayero in Kano and the controversial re-appointment of Lamido Sanusi, which he described as embarrassing for the Emirate.

He also highlighted efforts in Sokoto to curtail the powers of the Sultan and a recent reprimand issued to the Emir of Katsina. He argued that these actions reflect a troubling trend of political interference in institutions that have historically provided a sense of identity and unity.

According to Ba?o, “Traditional institutions hold immense historical and cultural value in our society. They serve as custodians of our traditions, customs, and values, and their integrity must be preserved”.

He contrasted the situation in the North with the respect afforded to traditional rulers in Southern Nigeria, such as the Oba of Benin and the Alake of Egba-land, who are treated with utmost respect and remain independent of political meddling.

Ba?o emphasised the importance of maintaining the impartiality and independence of traditional institutions to ensure societal cohesion and governance. He called on politicians to refrain from using their influence to manipulate traditional institutions and instead support their preservation.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the federal government for their commitment to protecting traditional institutions and to the National Assembly for initiating steps to separate traditional councils from state control.

“Preserving these institutions should be a priority for any responsible government. They play a vital role in maintaining stability, fostering cultural pride, and enhancing social harmony”, he concluded.

Ba?o urged continued vigilance to ensure the enduring respect and relevance of traditional institutions in Northern Nigeria.
