Police rescue 9 abducted persons in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has rescued nine abducted residents of Kuchi Village, in Munya local government area of Niger State, by armed gunmen.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Bala Kuryas, confirmed the abduction to newsmen yesterday, in Minna, the State capital.

He said that the Police anti-kidnap squad had since been deployed to the area to rescue the victims. “We have put in place sensitive security measures that will ensure the victims are rescued and are united with their loved ones. All we require from members of the general public is vital information that could aid our men on ground to ensure successful operation”, Kuryas stated.

According to a source, who pleaded anonymity, the gunmen, who invaded the community, went from one house to another, waking up their victims which include women and children before leading them into the bush through cattle routes.

The source further stated that there were no deaths recorded, giving the number of those abducted as 50. He also stated that the terrorists and their victims had been trapped by an overflowing river as a result of the heavy downpour.

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar, confirmed the abduction, adding that security operatives have responded. “Security operatives have responded since around 5am and we are waiting for the report”, he stated.
