For the third time this year, the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KAD-SIECOM) has postponed the Local Government election earlier slated for August 14.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the state electoral commission, Dr. Saratu Binta Dikko-Audu, while speaking with political leaders and stakeholders yesterday.
The new date according to the state electoral body is September 4, 2021. Recall that on two different occasions the LG polls were postponed this year.
She said the various postponements lack of proper arrival of some election materials, late arrival of battery from China that would power the Electronic Voting Machines, among others were still responsible for the shifting of the new date.
Dikko, who commended the political parties for their support said the action of the commission was inevitable.
According to her, the commission will now have ample time to allow election activities to be completed in order to ensure a credible local government election.
However, leaders of political parties and other stakeholders present at the meeting expressed mixed feelings over the postponement.
Reacting to the development, a stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Danjuma Sarki, noted that the postponement might not be unconnected with the fact that the ruling party are jittery over possible defeat.
However, Kaduna State Chairman of later-Party Advisory Council, (IPAC), Mikailu Abubakar, expressed satisfaction with the commissions genuine commitment towards a free, fair and credible election.
He said the IPAC was satisfied with the new date because “it is better to get it right than to start and we get it wrong”.
