…Says Nigeria has recovered from bankruptcy
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) that the worst of the country’s economic challenges is over, declaring that his administration has pulled Nigeria back from the brink of bankruptcy and laid a solid foundation for lasting prosperity.
Speaking while receiving a delegation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President acknowledged that the sweeping economic reforms introduced since he assumed office had imposed short-term hardships on Nigerians but insisted they were necessary to restore fiscal stability and reposition the economy for sustainable growth.
Tinubu said Nigeria had moved beyond the period of uncertainty that greeted the beginning of his administration. “The country has been placed on sound footing. The economy has recovered. The alarm for bankruptcy, the dark tunnel of uncertainty that we entered into when I came in, has changed”, the President said.
He added that the gains of the reforms were becoming increasingly evident, expressing optimism that the country’s economic recovery was taking shape. “The spirit of the people and the economic turnaround that we have been passing through is now clearer. The economy is recovered, I say, from bankruptcy”, he stated.
The President reaffirmed his confidence in the reforms being implemented by his administration, saying his conviction was rooted in his experience, professional background and belief that the difficult decisions were essential to secure Nigeria’s long-term future.
Tinubu also highlighted security, improved quality of life and economic stability as the major concerns of Nigerians, assuring the bishops that his administration remained committed to tackling insecurity, expanding infrastructure, creating jobs and attracting investments to drive sustainable development.
He commended the Catholic Church for its contributions to education, healthcare, peace-building and humanitarian services across the country, urging religious leaders to continue praying for the nation while partnering with government to promote unity, social harmony and national development.
Responding, the Catholic bishops reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, justice and the welfare of Nigerians. They also urged the Federal Government to remain focused on addressing the concerns of citizens, particularly rising living costs, insecurity and unemployment, while sustaining dialogue with critical stakeholders in the national interest.
