…Says its “fake news”
The Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC), has refuted recent reports alleging it approved a 40 percent increase in telecom tariffs, labeling the claims as false and misleading.
Recall that there had earlier been reports on social media that the Commission had approved the proposal for a 40% increase in tariffs for services rendered by telecommunications service providers beginning in January 2025.
The reports claimed that this will translate into ₦15.40 per minute for telephone calls and ₦5.60 for Short Message Service (SMS). It added that data bundles, 1GB data plan will cost a minimum of ₦1400.
However, the NCC made it clear that no such decision has been taken or implemented.
In a statement, the Commission explained that any change in tariffs must go through a thorough process, which includes consultations with industry stakeholders and cost-based studies to assess the impact on consumers and service providers.
The NCC assured that no steps in this direction have been initiated or completed to warrant a tariff hike.
Although telecom operators have previously requested tariff reviews due to rising operational expenses, the NCC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding consumer interests. It stressed that any potential tariff changes would adhere to regulatory standards and aim to maintain a balance between affordability and service sustainability.
The NCC advised the public to disregard these unfounded claims and rely solely on verified information from official sources. It also reassured Nigerians of its continued commitment to fair pricing and the delivery of high-quality telecom services.
