‘Kwankwaso set to dump PDP for APC’

Former Governor of Kano State, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is reportedly about to conclude his plans of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC).

According to reports, sources close to the former governor, Kwankwaso is not comfortable in the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), since the disrupted Zonal Congress of the Party, which took place in April at Kaduna.

The Congress, which was disrupted by members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, happened after they allegedly realised that their preferred candidate for the Zonal vice-chairmanship of the Party would not win the election.

Kwankwaso, a former Minister of Defence and the current Senator representing Kano-Central in the 9th Senate, who was allegedly supporting Mohammed Jamo Yusuf against Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, insisted that he must be allowed to bring the Zonal Vice-Chairman of the Party from his camp. Both Mohammed Jamu and Sen. Bello Hayatu Gwarzo are from Kano.

It was further revealed that Sen. Bello Hayatu Gwarzo is enjoying the support of majority stakeholders of the North-West zone, including Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, whom Kwankwaso had accused of buying the nomination form for Bello Hayatu in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service.

Following the outcome of the Congress that was not held and the sensing of defeat by Kwankwaso, he was said to have become convinced that the PDP is not ready to support him and his candidates, hence the start of consultation with members of the APC, including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Kwankwaso reportedly met the Asiwaju in Saudi Arabia and critically discussed his next political move in a closed-door meeting.

The sources further revealed that he is currently in consultation with Yobe State governor and Chairman of the APC Extraordinary Caretaker and Convention Committee, Mai Mala Buni.

Some of the governors that are in the frontline of wooing Kwankwaso are said to include Governor Badaru Abubakar, of Jigawa State, and Mohammed Bello Matawalle, of Zamfara State, who just joined the party on Tuesday.

Kwankwaso is expected to be joining the APC along with thousands of his supporters including the 2019 gubernatorial candidate of the party in Kano Abba Kabir Yusuf and his Deputy Aminu AbdulSalam Gwarzo.

However, it was reliably gathered that majority of other Kwankwasiyya stakeholders are not likely to join Kwankwaso in the APC. These are the majority of people that served him in the State Executive Council.

Although Kwankwaso is yet to make any formal announcement regarding his planned defection, the sources hinted that it is expected the moment he finishes consultation, but that it would be before the ward, local and State Congresses of the APC which will be taking place in August.
