Kano–Maraɗi–Dutse railway construction records major progress

Kano–Maraɗi–Dutse railway

The Kano–Maraɗi–Dutse railway project is making steady progress, with construction advancing at the Kazaure Railway Station, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration continues its massive investment in rail infrastructure.

The project is one of the Federal Government’s flagship transport initiatives aimed at improving connectivity, boosting trade, and supporting economic growth.

When completed, the railway will have 20 stations, five workshops, 52 bridges, and more than 80 road crossings. It is expected to transport 3,000 metric tonnes of cargo and about 9,374 passengers every day. The new line will also connect with the Lagos–Kano railway, creating a stronger rail network for both passengers and freight.

The Federal Government says the project is designed to reduce the cost of transporting goods, shorten travel time, improve regional trade, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Officials believe the railway will also encourage investment and make it easier for businesses to move products across northern Nigeria and beyond.

Supporters of the Tinubu administration say the railway is clear evidence that government borrowing is being invested in major infrastructure projects with long-term economic value. They argue that rail development, alongside ongoing road construction, is laying the foundation for a stronger and more competitive economy.

The project has also attracted political attention, with some opposition figures arguing that infrastructure alone cannot address the country’s current economic challenges. However, government supporters insist that modern roads and railways are essential for increasing productivity, lowering transport costs, and driving sustainable development.

As work continues, the Kano–Maraɗi–Dutse railway is emerging as one of the signature projects of the Tinubu administration. Once completed, it is expected to improve transportation, expand trade opportunities, strengthen regional links, and further advance the government’s vision of building a more connected and economically vibrant Nigeria.
