The little or or lack of knowledge of the social protection in Kaduna by the state political functionaries is hindering the functional financing of the programme to make the intended impact and take many of the citizens out of poverty.
This evidence came to the fore at a two day 2021 review and 2022 planning meeting of Kaduna State Social Protection Accountability Coalition KADSPAC, holding in Zaria.
Social protection is a set of interventions whose objective is to reduce social and economic risk and vulnerability, and to alleviate extreme poverty and deprivation. It is concerned with preventing, managing, and overcoming situations that adversely affect people’s wellbeing.
Kaduna State has one of the best social registers in Nigeria with varied demographies and regularly updated for Inclusiveness.
Monitoring and evaluation of the state social protection interventions revealed that Kaduna state political appointees, especially commissioners and legislators lack deep knowledge of the programme, and as a result are always hesitant to cash back interventions that would make impact on the poor and vulnerable.
Such government functionaries are to be sensitized to familiarized themselves with the programme as KADSPAC also strive to ensure the state government pass and assent to the Social Protection Bill to give it a legal backing as a legacy law for the state.
Social protection is a multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary approach that contributes to poverty reduction, articulating policy priorities of government.
