Gunmen yesterday evening attacked the Zonkwa Police Station in Zangon-Kataf local government area of Kaduna State, killing at least two officers.
The assailants, who reportedly stormed the station located near Kamyim Hotel in the Kurmin-Bi area of Zonkwa, opened fire immediately after arrival, sending residents fleeing in panic.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers were believed to be on a mission to free suspected vandals earlier arrested in Kachia town, whom they thought were being detained at the Zonkwa station.
“They assumed the suspects were here, but it turned out they weren’t. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done”, an eyewitness told newsmen.
A video of the aftermath showed two slain officers lying in uniform within the station premises, as locals gathered at the scene discussing the attack.
Security operatives were later deployed to restore calm in the town.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
