The Zamfara council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has confirmed the murder of a Voice of Nigeria (VON) correspondent, Hamisu ?anjibga. His death was announced on Wednesday.
?anjibga had been missing for three days before his corpse was found.
A statement issued by the NUJ State chapel’s Secretary, Ibrahim Ahmad, said the deceaseds body was dumped in a soak-away.
According to the statement, The discovery of his corpse was a result of an unpleasant odour observed by children of an Islamic school behind his house in the evening of yesterday. After breaking the soak-away, the dead body was confirmed to be that of ?anjibga by his family and some neighbours.
Sources said the family was initially contacted to pay N1 million for his release. Meanwhile, the State Police said it has arrested a suspect.
The NUJ has extended its condolences to the deceaseds family and VON. It urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the journalists death and bring the perpetrators to book.
The deceased had since been buried in Gusau, according to Islamic injunctions.
