Against the backdrop of public outcry, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally agreed to postpone the deadline for the ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise, which was initially slated for the end of this month.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Hon. A’ishatu Jibril Dukku, revealed this during a briefing with fellow lawmakers on the committee’s efforts to guarantee the implementation of a resolution that the House resolution reached last week.
“The Committee held a meeting with INEC yesterday (Tuesday), where they agreed to extend the CVR, and all our resolutions were approved”, she told members of the House at plenary yesterday.
Recall that last Wednesday, the House of Representatives urged INEC to extend the deadline for continuous voter registration by an extra 60 days from June 30, 2022, in order to allow more Nigerians to register.
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had stopped the electoral body from ending the exercise until all eligible voters had been registered.
The Commission on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that the Commission will comply with the court order to extend the ongoing CVR to June 30.
The exercise, which was meant to end in June 2022 was greeted by calls to extend the CVR exercise.
The House also called on the Commission to deploy additional staff and voter registration machines across the country to meet the objective.
