Demands public apology
The Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has issued a strong condemnation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following the arrest on Monday of a radio presenter, Favour Ekoh, during a live broadcast at Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu.
The arrest, which took place during the stations Prime Time programme, at approximately 6:45 pm, has sparked concern over press freedom in Nigeria.
In an issued press release dated 15th October, signed by IBANs Chairman, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan, and Publicity Director, Greg Odutayo, tge association described the incident as a “blatant violation of press freedom” and an “abuse of power” by the EFCC, which allegedly disrupted the live broadcast and seized essential communication equipment from the studio.
According to IBAN, the actions of the EFCC is not only a blatant violation of press freedom but also an abuse of power that undermines the integrity of Nigerias broadcasting industry, noting that also, it not only sent a negative signal to the public but also set a dangerous precedent for media independence in the country.
While the EFCC has claimed that the arrest was conducted based on a lawful warrant, IBAN stressed that the manner in which it was carried out – during a live broadcast – was inappropriate and damaging to the integrity of Nigerias broadcasting industry.
The association demanded the immediate return of all seized equipment and a public apology from the EFCC. “While we do not condone any unlawful activity allegedly committed by the presenter, it is essential that due process be followed”, the statement read.
IBAN argued that the actions of one individual should not lead to the penalization of an entire broadcasting station.
The association further emphasized the critical role of the media in supporting democracy, urging relevant authorities to uphold press freedom and ensure such incidents do not reoccur. “An attack on one is an attack on all,” IBAN’s statement declared, calling for the sanctity of media houses to be respected.
The association affirmed their commitment to advocating for the rights of broadcasters in Nigeria and ensuring their independence remains protected.
