Shari'ah Council slams CAN

Condemns U.S. ‘Christian killings’ narrative

The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN), Kaduna State Chapter, has condemned what it described as a “false and dangerous narrative” of Christian persecution in Nigeria, accusing the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), as well as foreign powers of spreading misleading claims that threaten national unity.

In a strongly-worded statement issued in Kaduna, the Council’s Secretary, Engineer Hassan AbdulRahman, criticised the recent decision by the Donald Trump-led United States government to designate Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ over alleged Christian killings, describing the move as “biased, one-sided, and grossly misleading”.

According to AbdulRahman, Nigeria’s security challenges stem from “a complex web of ethnic, political, and economic factors,” not from a government-backed campaign against any religious group. He maintained that, contrary to Western portrayals, Muslims have been the primary victims in many of the conflicts across the country.

“The Council is not happy with this development on allegations regarding Christian genocide in Nigeria. The Trump administration should have sought a balanced perspective before jumping to conclusions. By statistics, Muslims are mostly the victims in various instances”, he stated.

He faulted Western media and governments for what he termed “selective empathy,” accusing them of amplifying narratives that favour Christians while ignoring violence against Muslims. “Wherever Muslims are killed, it doesn’t concern the West or the U.S. They only highlight issues affecting Christians, and that bias breeds distrust and alienation”, he added.

The SCSN expressed disappointment with CAN, accusing the Christian body of “initiating these lies” and fueling religious tension in the country. “To CAN, they should know that when Nigeria sinks, may Allah forbid, it’s all of us that will bear the brunt — Christians, Muslims, not even pagans will be spared”, AbdulRahman warned.

He urged Nigerians to reject what he called “foreign lies designed to divide us” and to embrace dialogue, understanding, and cooperation to overcome insecurity. “Let us not allow foreign lies to divide us. We must solve our differences without inviting bloodthirsty imperialists to destroy the only nation we have”, he said.

Calling for a strong government response, the SCSN demanded more decisive action from Abuja beyond press statements. “Our position is clear – we strongly condemn this decision by the U.S. Government must act decisively, even if it means cutting diplomatic ties, to demonstrate the seriousness of this insult”, AbdulRahman declared.

The statement comes amid escalating diplomatic tension between Abuja and Washington, and growing concerns that religious narratives could overshadow Nigeria’s deeper security and developmental challenges.
