Former Kaduna-Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has advised ex-presidential candidate Peter Obi to stay put in the Labour Party (LP), warning him not to abandon the platform that shot him to national prominence.

Sani gave the advice yesterday, in a birthday message to Obi, who turned 63.
“Happy Birthday to Mr. Peter Obi. My advice, hold thy Labour, it’s the Devil you know. Don’t chase two rabbits at the same time”, he wrote in a post shared via X (formerly Twitter).
His comment comes amid intense speculation over Obi’s next political move as talk of a new mega-opposition coalition continues to swirl.
In recent weeks, rumours have grown louder that Obi might be considering teaming up with other heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir el-Rufa’i in a new political alliance said to be using the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its vehicle for the 2027 elections.
However, Obi who joined the Labour Party in 2022 and contested the 2023 presidency under its banner has repeatedly insisted he remains a member of LP. Despite coming third in that election, he has remained one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s opposition space, especially among young people.
But the Labour Party itself has been in turmoil, with two factions laying claim to the party’s leadership and legitimacy. The chaos has led many to wonder whether Obi might seek a new political base before 2027.
Sani, however, believes the former Anambra governor would be better off sticking with the “devil he knows”.
Obi is yet to publicly respond to the birthday message or the subtle warning.
