‘Declare State Of Emergency on drug abuse’ House of Reps. urges FG

The House of Representatives yesterday called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on drug abuse in Nigeria.

This followed a ‘Motion of urgent public importance’, brought by Hon. Henry Nwauba, calling for urgent action to be taken to arrest the ugly development amongst youths and adults who are into drug abuse.

Moving the motion, the lawmaker said, These addictive drugs come by different names as tramadol, codeine syrup, Lacatomtom and so forth, and the endpoint according to many is that drug abuse is fast destroying the future of the country..

Hon. Nwauba also pointed out the dangerous consequences of drug abuse if the government fails to act in full force. Debating the motion, Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Toby Okechukwu, condemned the vices in very strong terms while also suggesting that an emergency on illicit drug abuse be declared to stem the ugly tide.

The House while adopting the motion, the Federal Lawmaker from Kano State, Hon. Balarabe Kukali, unanimously called on the Federal Government to be pro-active in checking the dangerous trend through an aggressive enlightenment campaign through the national orientation agency, as well as call on the NDLEA and other security agencies to up the ante before drugs ingestion among the youths completely obliterate a whole generation of Nigerians.
