Covid-19: UNILAG asks students to vacate campus indefinitely

…Reverts to online classes

The management of the University of Lagos, (UNILAG), has asked students of the institution to vacate their halls of residence indefinitely on or before 12:pm today, Thursday, to avoid the spread of the Covid-19 infection in the campus, as more students have tested positive to the infection.

This decision was reached at an emergency meeting held by the University Senate, yesterday.

According to an issued statement, students have been assured that lectures scheduled for the rest of the semester will be delivered virtually, with effect from 26th of July, 2021.

The university’s management explained that the institution commenced physical classes at the end of May 2021, when the positivity rate of the Covid-19 infection dropped to about 1%.

Nevertheless, the  management continued to enforce the Covid-19 protocols in all the teaching and learning spaces as well as the student halls of residence as the Covid-19 vaccination was made available to staff and students through the support of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Senator Lanre Tejuosho, in a bid to protect the University community from the deadly infection.

It was however observed lately that some students tested positive to the Covid-19 infection.

The UNILAG management claimed that the infected students had been sent to the appropriate designated facilities in the state for treatment, while contact-tracing had enabled the school management to identify those that had been exposed to the infection.

Those that had been exposed to the infection have been asked to isolate themselves appropriately.
