Covid-19: Rivers govt. directs schools to re-open today

Ø  As Lagos announces new resumption date for workers

The Rivers State government has directed private and public schools in the State to re-open today, Monday.

This was announced by the Permanent Secretary at the State’s Ministry of Education, Chidi Adiele, in a statement issued yesterday.

According to Adiele, all schools in Rivers State are to resume academic activities on January 4, for the completion of the first-term academic session. He explained that the directive was issued with the approval of the state governor, Nyesom Wike, in line with the schools calendar published in August 2020.

The State government however warned the schools to maintain all COVID-19 protocols, including the wearing of face masks and the use of hand sanitisers and also asked them to introduce staggered classes for morning and afternoon in order to avoid overcrowding of the schools.

Meanwhile, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu  has extended the stay at home order for all civil servants from Grade Levels-14 and below until January 18, 2021, as part of measures to curtail the second wave of COVID-19 in the State.

The approval was contained in a statement released by the Ministry of Information and Strategy and signed by the Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, yesterday.

The postponement comes before the expiration of 14 days’ work-from-home policy earlier announced last year by the governor.

Muri-Okunola noted that the directive excludes staff on essential duty, as well as First Responders.
