…Seeks sanctions against Wike, alleges complicity of judges
A pro-democracy group, Nigeria Unite, has petitioned the United States Senate, warning of an “imminent collapse of democracy” in Nigeria.
In a letter dated November 11, 2025, the Coalition accused key government figures—particularly Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike—of leading a campaign to suppress opposition and manipulate state institutions.
The group alleged that Wike has been “systematically undermining political freedoms” by influencing the judiciary, police, and INEC to weaken opposition parties, citing the lingering political crisis in Rivers State as evidence of democratic decay.
“Nigeria is sliding toward a one-party state reminiscent of the Abacha era”, the letter warned, accusing the ruling APC of coercion, inducement, and infiltration of opposition parties like the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress, (ADC).
Nigeria Unite urged the US, UK, EU, and African Union (AU) to intervene, calling for targeted sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes against Wike and other officials allegedly involved in “anti-democratic acts”.
The Coalition also demanded accountability for “compromised judges and police officials” enabling political impunity, warning that failure to act could destabilize Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.
“The window to save Nigeria’s democracy is closing,” the group stated. “International action is urgently needed to prevent a regional crisis that could threaten peace across Africa and beyond”.
