Ø As Reps Caucus gives reason to impeach President
A former Senator, Rafiu Hanga has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to sack the Service Chiefs, even after much outcry, is because he is afraid of a ‘coup’.
Hanga, in an interview, revealed that the National Assembly has called on the president to remove the service chiefs due to the rising insecurity in the nation. He highlighted that the officers have remained in office despite being eligible for retirement.
According to him, “The Senate and the House of Representatives have made this call several times, but the president has refused to act for the reasons best known to him. Some people say he is afraid of coup.”
“He once mentioned it that he didn’t want to change the Service Chief because there were very ambitious officers down the ladder; that means he is afraid of coup. The most unfortunate thing is that these Service Chiefs have over stayed their usefulness.”
The former Kano central Senator described the situation as ‘demoralizing and disheartening’.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus of the House of Representatives has called on members of the Green Chamber, to begin impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement yesterday, signed by its leader, Kingsley Chinda, the caucus called on Nigerians to call on their representatives in the house to launch proceedings to remove President Buhari over ‘gross incompetence’ and ‘persistent breach of the constitution’.
“The PDP caucus also wants members of the Federal Executive Council to invoke the provisions of Section 144 (1) of the Constitution by declaring that the President is incapable of discharging the functions of the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, it stated.
Chinda also accused the Buhari presidency of ‘crassness’ and ‘lame duck attitude’ to governance, saying, “President Buhari is unwilling, (as it consistently appears,) to provide leadership to our fast collapsing country. Rather than take the proverbial bull by the horn, President Buhari ensconces himself in Aso Rock, typical of a Mourner-in-Chief, and issues press statements that make no meaning to a grieving nation”.
“When a country elects a clown as its President based on sentiments and deceit, the country becomes saddled with circus, pantomime jesters who reduce statecraft to utter joke.” he stated.
